Wood Floor sanding can be done by hand, but electrically driven sanding machines are used almost exclusively today. These machines are usually available from rental agencies and some paint stores/home centers which also supply the sandpaper. Some handwork is usually necessary in less accessible places.
Sanding Machines
Sanding machines may be either the drum type or disk type (floor polisher). In drum sanders the sandpaper is mounted on a cylindrical drum that rotates on an axis parallel to the plane of the floor. Thus the sandpaper makes its scratches in straight lines in the direction of movement of the machine. In disk sanders the sandpaper is mounted on a disk that rotates in a circle in the plane of the floor. As a disk sander is moved over the floor, the grits make spiral scratches that necessarily cross the grain of the wood. A drum sander, however, cannot reach the last few inches of floor nearest the baseboard. Electric edgers, which are small disk sanders, are available for sanding these edges of the floor, or they may be done by hand.

The timeless classic beauty of a real wood parquet floor reflects the very best of traditional flooring techniques. Hardwood blocks can be laid in a variety of Parquet Flooring Patterns that will reflect your style of living as well as complimenting their surroundings.
Hardwood Parquet flooring is perfectly suited for use in Gymnasiums, Schools, Dance Floors, Restaurants as well as in a domestic setting. Parquet flooring is also ideally suited for use in areas that will be subject to wheeled traffic.
Finer Flooring hardwood parquet blocks are machined to exacting standards providing tightly interlocking joints on all edges. Each block is locked to the surrounding blocks to give maximum strength and stability to the floor. Each hardwood block is individually glued to the subfloor in the required pattern.
Finer Flooring parquet blocks come in a 15mm or 20mm thickness with a wide selection of lengths and face widths. In certain circumstances, hardwood blocks can be manufactured to bespoke sizes. Wood species available include Merbau, Rhodesian Teak (variegated), Iroko, Rhodesian Teak All Brown, European Oak, American Oak, Mahogany, Genuine Teak All Brown and Maple. Some species are available in Natural and Prime Grades.
Our Parquet blocks are machined to provide a thick wear layer (approximately 10mm) above the tongue and groove, this enables the Parquet Floor to be rejuvenated many times, the floor will likely outlast the building it's in.
